SAPS raise awareness on domestic violence

KwaThema - A Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign was conducted in the KwaThema Tornado Section by the SAPS, to educate community members on abuse.

This campaign, which took place on Monday, was initiated by the SAPS Provincial Intervention Task Team due to the increase of domestic violence in the area.

The SAPS and some of the community members started the day with a march, and from there they had discussions on domestic violence.

“We have discovered that some of the root causes of domestic violence normally steam from alcohol abuse as these people normally tend to cause conflict and have misunderstandings.

“Another leading cause seems to be financial problems in homes.

“We have therefore decided, that we will initiate operations to raid illegal operating shebeens and places that sell alcohol, which close later than 2am, as this is against the law and because this is part of what is causing some of the issues, including the high number of rapes,” says KwaThema spokesperson W/O David Mphali.

He adds that since most of their domestic violence cases are steaming from the Ekuthuleni informal settlement and hostel, they will try and find ways to address this issue, including pushing for the revival of Induna Forums so they can work together with the police and the Community Policing Forum.
