Community cleans vacant house

KwaThema - Last Saturday residents of Mgadi Street in KwaThema came with their rakes, spades and brooms to clean a vacant house that was reportedly being used for criminal activities in their community.

According to resident Thulani Simelane, many community members were being robbed by criminals and drug users who would sit at the unkept house.

“The house has been vacant for some time now, and we have spotted nyaope addicts occupy the house to smoke and do other illegal activities.

“We as residents are tired of the crime caused by this house and so we decided to clean the yard,” says Simelane.

Residents claim the owner of the home no longer lives there and has left the house to deteriorate.

Simelane further claims that they had a meeting with the owner, who said they may assist in finding a tenant to rent out the house.

“The house is in a bad condition, and we don’t think anyone will be willing to rent this house until it’s refurbished,” he says.

Sisana Silinda, another resident, says as a concerned community they have done their part to ensure the environment that they live in is safe from criminals and drug users.

“We will continue to monitor the house to make sure no illegal activities take place here and that no one is a victim of crime in our street,” she says.
