Living his dream

This young man says he is not just a rapper, but is also a poet and a songwriter.

KwaThema – Music can be a healer of a broken heart — this discovery was made by Tshepo “Tp-toes” Moagi (17).

This young man says he is not just a rapper, but is also a poet and a songwriter.

“I started school at Fred Habedi Primary School and when I was 12, I started writing music. By the age of 14 I was fortunate enough to be able to start recording music with my friends.

“Then from there I moved on to doing this in a studio and at 15 I recorded my biggest song which got over 1 000 downloads on social media called ‘I Will Always’ and that was my turning point,” he says.

Moagi says at the age of 16 he decided to form a group with some of the people he had worked with in on his hit single, however, they separated last year and then he became a solo artist and while pushing his brand.

“I also made and sold T-shirts just to promote my brand and soon after that, I released a single called ‘Forgive Me’ which landed me an interview on a local radio station which is getting a great response.

“It has also helped me share a stage with people like hip-hop artist Reason.

“Music spoke to me and because this is an expensive industry I have had to sacrifice a lot for my career,” he says.

He adds that when all things seemed bad in his life, he has always written songs, it’s all he knows and it has helped him to work through the pain and find peace.

“Now I have opened a recording label for myself and have four young people that are signed under my label.

“Just because I grew up in a tough neighbourhood, I did not stop dreaming and tried to make a better life for myself.

“My extended play album was expected to drop this month, but has now been pushed back after I was approached by a big media company in Johannesburg. I am happy about this because my biggest dream is to inspire other young people. I want them to believe and know that they can change their current situation,” he says.

This exceptional young man is still in Grade 11 and says he wants to study actuarial science after matric.
