White City Jabavu turns 60

KwaThema – White City Jabavu the Re-Birth Organisation will celebrate 60 years of the White City on December 5.

Celebrations will be from 8am to 6pm at the KwaThema Mokoena Park formerly known as Emlotheni which is situated between the White City area and Deep Levels.

“Though the area will officially turn 60 next year, we have decided to celebrate it this year as part of our heritage programme. The purpose of the day is to remember where we come from and our role that we have to play in this new South Africa. It is also to remember those heroes and heroines of the then informal settlement Jabavu that supplied the Daggafontein Mine which was the world’s single producer during the 1930s and their fighting spirit that led to the formation of the Sofa-Sonke Squatters movement under the leadership of James Mpanza.

“On the day we will have various dignitaries and a lot of activities including sports and entertainment, so we ask the community to come and celebrate with us,” says chairperson of White City Jabavu the Re-Birth, Mandla Phakathi.
