Disabled athletes excel at trials

KwaThema – A number of athletes from the KwaThema Disability Sports Academy have qualified to compete in next year's Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled.

This comes after 15 athletes from the academy participated in the Central Gauteng for the Disabled trials, recently held at the Germiston Stadium.

“We have nine participants who qualified to represent Gauteng in athletics, and eight athletes who will participate in the cerebral palsy soccer at the Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled, in March, in Bloemfontein.

“Three athletes will also participate in the South African Schools Games which will be held in Pretoria at the end of this year.

“Though we had 15 members take part in these athletics trials, some of them participated in more than one sport,” says chairperson of the KwaThema Disability Sports Academy, Aubrey Mathebela.

He says he is happy that most of the athletes qualified, even though he is not yet 100% happy with the standard of the performance.

“The lack of resources impacts on the standard of our athletes, but we have started with training and trying to find funding and transport for the team going to the nationals.

“I am thrilled as this has put them in good standing to be selected to South Africa’s team for the Paralympics Games team,” he adds.

Physically disabled athletes in the community from 10 to 21 years old, interested in rowing, swimming or playing volleyball can contact Ntombi Zwane on 073 901 1120.
