City of Ekurhuleni brings photography and arts to youth

Kwatsaduza - If you have a love for using a professional camera and wish to have a career in photography one day, then this is for you.

The City of Ekurhuleni is inviting camera enthusiasts with a dream of studying photography to enrol for a nine-month digital photography course.

The purpose of this is to assist amateur photographers with entrepreneurial and professional photography skills to help eradicate youth unemployment in Ekurhuleni.

Spokesman of Ekurhuleni, Themba Gadebe, says even though classes commenced in September, registration is still to all aspiring photographers between the ages of 18 to 30, living in Tsakane, Duduza, KwaThema, Nigel, Geluksdal, Brakpan and Springs.

“We as a city, believe that such an initiative will encourage our young people to develop their own enterprises and to generate an income for themselves.

“All applicants will study for free and cameras will be provided for the duration of the course,” says Gadebe.

Some of the topics the course will cover includes basic and theoretical camera functions, capturing and analysing situations, interpreting themes, photo journalism, architecture, people, city life and landscape photography.

Gadebe says classes will take place every Wednesday in the Duduza Library’s group activity room.

In addition to this, the city is providing potential artists the opportunity to sharpen their skills through the Ekurhuleni Art Development School.

These lessons are meant to help learners whose schools don’t offer art as a subject and out of school young people interested in taking up a career in visual arts.

Registration for art classes is open until October 9 and they will run until May 2016.

The free art classes are available at the following venues:

n Springs Community Hall on Saturdays, 9am to 11.30am.
