KwaThema – A taxi known in the townships as a (4+1) has been found by police after its driver was hijacked on Thursday afternoon.

According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, spokesman of Springs police, the complainant, who is the driver of the taxi, picked up four clients at Job Maseko Street, in KwaThema, at about 12.15pm.

When they got close to the police station, the driver asked the passengers to pay, but the passenger on the left front seat said that they would pay at Reedville.

“The driver then stopped the taxi at the corner the of Sansalvado and Viyala streets in Reedville,” says Ramphora.

“And there, they found a man waiting at the corner.

“The front passenger then got out and went to the man and the pair then came back to the taxi and said they wanted the car.

“One of the suspects pointed a firearm at the driver and took his cellphone.”

All five suspects then drove off in the Toyota Tazz in the direction of Wright Park.

The taxi driver saw a passing EMPD vehicle and stopped it, asking the officer for help.

The officer took the driver to the KwaThema Police Station, where he was told to open a case at the Springs SAPS.

“While the metro officer was driving the owner to Springs, the owner was informed by police that the vehicle had been found along the R554 Springs West Road,” says Ramphora.

“The suspects have been arrested and are still in police custody at the Brakpan Police Station.”
