Sinaba Stadium handball courts officially open

Daveyton - The Sinaba Stadium handball court have officially been opened.

“As the courts are officially opening, we are having a training session for the u/14 and u/16 boys and girls to prepare the provincial team for the upcoming South African Youth National Championships, which will take place from October 7 to 9 in Johannesburg.

“We have development throughout the year, but give the youth a chance to compete with such tournaments as it is normally seniors who are the ones that play,” says chairperson of the Gauteng Province Handball Association, Naledi Khunyeli.

She says based on this, parents should assist them.

“Give children a chance to play from school, so coaches can develop them, as we are trying to revive the sport in Gauteng.

“Though this is a fairly new sport in South Africa, it was there but went dead, so now the province is working with region to bring it back,” she says.

All provinces will be represented in the upcoming tournament.

The Ekurhuleni Handball Academy staff believe their players are ready.

“Schools train on their own during the week, then on Saturdays, we train as a team.

“Handball is back in Daveyton and we want to revive it in other locations as well.

“We had teams in Tembisa, Vosloorus, Katlehong, Tsakane, Boksburg and Wattville but it stopped, so we are challenging teams to revive the sport in their townships,” says chairman of the Ekurhuleni Handball Academy, Reginald Mahlangu.

The academy has two sports science students, Yemi Adegoke and Chantel Ndala, who are assisting them by assessing the players before they play.

It also has two professional coaches and one professional referee.
