Local golfers go international

KwaThema - Golfing duo Demist Mogafe (53) and Andrew Mothibe (58) are heading to Mexico in November to participate in the Audi quattro Cup World Final.

This follows their win at the Audi quattro Regional Tournament that took place in Glendower in Edenvale.

The two men, who are members of the State Mines Country Club in Brakpan, hail from KwaThema and share a passion for golf.

Mothibe, who has been playing golf for over 25 years, explains he started playing golf when he was a young boy.

He later became a caddy and worked weekends at the Pollak Park Golf Club in Springs to get pocket money.

This is where his love for the game grew immensely.

“It was unfortunate in those days that we were not given opportunities to play such sporting codes due to the apartheid system, but never the less I persevered and still enjoy the sport,” he says.

The pair, who met on the golf course, have won a number of tournaments as a pair and as individuals.

Mogafe has won five major tournaments, including the Mercedes Benz Golf tournament and will be participating in the BMW Tournament in Knysna in October.

He encourages young aspiring golf players to continue with the sport as there are not many local players and there are opportunities for them to play the sport professionally.

“We want to see the sport grow in our communities and see our children, who have channels to explore golf, use them, and maybe we can have a Tiger Woods come from our community,” says Mogafe.
