Clinic under renovations

KwaThema - To cope with the current overcrowding in clinics in KwaThema, the Selope Thema Clinic is being upgraded.

The local facility is situated in KwaThema Extension Three and renovation work has been underway since last month.

According to ward councillor Wilson Busakwe, the clinic, which is one of those experiencing overcrowding in the township, is expected to be completed in the next 16 months.

He says the upgrading of the clinic does not only bring hope of better services, but it has also created employment for 10 residents of KwaThema, who have been struggling to make ends meet.

Busakwe explains that the contractor on site is still busy with the digging of the trenches, to build a strong foundation for the new structures which will be built there.

He says the newly upgraded clinic will be of help, especially to those living in the Marikana informal settlement.

“To ensure that people living in Marikana and in other sections of Extensions Two and Three receive health services, the metro was forced to send mobile clinics to those areas,” says Busakwe.

He points out that residents in those areas will now have a nearby clinic which will help them with all their health care needs, and appeals to residents to protect the facility and not vandalise it when they demand other services from the metro.

One of the residents working on the site, Khula Mhlungu (35), says the project has put food on his table.

“I am excited that residents will now have access to a better health care facility, but it is also true that the development is fighting against poverty in our homes,” he adds.

Extension Three resident Nomalanga Mathenjwa (55) says the new clinic will help residents, in that they will not have to walk long distances to other sections of the township for quick and satisfactory health services.

“Residents were forced to attend clinics in other sections of the township because of the overcrowding that the Selope Thema Clinic was experiencing,” she says.

She thanks the metro for the development in that area.
