Club takes aches and pain in their stride

The Springs Striders Athletics Club recently held their Aches and Pains prize-giving party.

The event took place in the hall of the St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brakpan.

This is an annual event held by the club where members share their experiences of the Comrades Marathon and not a single person left without a prize.

Winnie Mbukwana was crowned Queen of the Day for being the club’s first veteran woman to cross the finish line.

With the absence of Meshack Sogo, who finished first in the club’s veteran section, club chairman Jackie Seddon passed the King of the Day crown to Mziwakhe Maseko.

He was the first Striders man to finish in the open division.

Karin Smith, who finished the marathon with only seven seconds to spare before the 12 hours cut-off time, is proud to have finished.

Jackie says none of the runners would enjoy the Comrades as much as they do without the support from the team.

Petra Myburgh, a grand master runner of the club, received a well-deserved prize for finishing her 19th Comrades.

“I would not be able to do this without the grace of God,” she says.

Several other members received green numbers.

These permanent numbers are awarded to participants who have successfully completed 10 Comrades Marathons.

Club secretary Rhoda Steyn says it is always fun to share the aches and pains of the club members.

She thanked Alida Brandell for preparing the delicious food.
