Water dries up at KwaThema Sports Complex

KwaThema - It has been six months since the KwaThema Sports Complex has been without water.

Water remains vitally important for everyone’s lives, especially for sportsmen, to prevent dehydration.

Having no water at the complex affects the cricket, soccer and golf players who use the facility every weekend.

The sports complex regularly hosts games and practices every week and the fact that no water is available makes it very hard for the sportsmen,” says Peter Vonya, KwaThema Cricket Club chairman.

Not only are athletes affected by the challenge, but also those who stay at the cricket clubhouse and the security guard.

“We will soon be hosting a cricket event and we hope that the basic need for water will be attended to, so that all the participants can gain basic access to it,” says Vonya.

One of the workers at the complex, Maxwell Mtsweni, says the situation forces him to ask for water from neighbours, in order for him to drink, cook and wash.

Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni Metro spokesman, says a number of hydrants at the complex have been vandalised.

He says this forced the metro to close the main water supply to the facility while in the process of repairing the hydrants.

“The hydrants will be repaired, but the metro needs to resolve the current challenge of security and access control in the facility,” he concludes.
