Cattle roam freely around KwaThema

Vlakfontein - Residents are concerned that roaming livestock near Vlakfontein Road may pose a danger to motorists.

The animals are regularly found near the road and it is feared they will obstruct traffic or cause accidents.

KwaThema resident Philip Ngwenya (69) says the cows and goats are owned by people from the KwaThema Hostel who allow them to roam freely without a herder.

Ngwenya believes no one will steal them due to the community being in ‘fear’ of witchcraft.

It is alleged the animals are protected by witchcraft and should anyone attempt to steal them, they will be bewitched.

He believes the roaming animals will chase investors away from the township.

“They will see the township as more rural than it really is,” he says.

“I do not condemn subsistence farming, but I also don’t condone the cattle roaming around the township.”

Ward 77 councillor Wilson Busakwe says he can not comment on the matter due to the by-laws. He did not explain further.

The Ekurhuleni Metro had not responded by the time the article went to print.
