Church caretaker dies

KwaThema - KwaThema resident and caretaker of the Uniting Presbyterian Church of South Africa, Mohau Mofokeng, died on May 28, at the age of 54.

Mofokeng was born on October 31, 1961, in the Free State.

Church Elder Amos Tshabalala (78) says Mofokeng arrived in KwaThema in 1993 when Pastor Jacob Mafasa was still at the church.

He says Mofokeng told him and Mafasa that he walked from McKenzie Park, Benoni, to KwaThema, after being evicted by his former employer during the midnight hours.

Tshabalala explains Mofokeng arrived with wounds on his body.

Mafasa then prayed for him and Mofokeng was accepted as a full member of the church and lived in the church house.

Mofokeng also joined the Uniting Presbyterian Churches Men’s Fellowship (UPMF) were he studied theology and became an adviser.

He was well-known in the community and loved gardening.

Before his death, Mofokeng was asked about his family, but was reluctant to talk about them

The funeral service will be held at 7am tomorrow (Saturday) at the Uniting Presbyterian Church of South Africa, in Rapodile Street, Highland Section.

The cortège will leave for the Vlakfontein Cemetery at 9am.
