Kwatsaduza – Innocent Mayoyo and Mxolisi ‘Mayweather’ Nombewu were honoured at the Ekurhuleni Sports Awards.

The awards were held at the Alberton Civic Centre last Wednesday night.

Innocent Mayoyo (49), a renowned football development coach, made Kwatsduza proud when he received the MMC’s Special Merit Award.

Mayoyo started Ayoba-Yo-Youth Soccer Academy in 2009.

He rose to fame in football when he played professionally as a goalkeeper for Orlando Pirates, Umtata Bush Bucks, Bloemfontein Celtic, Santos and Ajax Cape Town, to name a few.

Mayoyo was appointed as an assistant coach for Moroka Swallows in 2007.

In 2009, he joined the the Dynamos FC, and in that year the team qualified for the national play-offs, before he was appointed as a head coach for the Mpumalanga Aces.

Following his recognition by the metro for his contribution to soccer ,not only in Kwatsaduza but throughout the country, Mayoyo says he is grateful to the municipality.

He feels it is his responsibility to ensure that soccer does not die in the townships.

This year has already been great for Mayoyo following his U/11 and Super teams winning the Springs Local Football Association League.

Tsakane’s very own boxing champion, Mxolisi ‘Mayweather’ Nombewu (27) scooped the Sportsman of the Year Award.

He was crowned the world bantamweight champion in September, last year, after defeating Siphosethu Mvula at the Orient Theatre in East London, Eastern Cape.

Last month he defended his title at the theatre again, this time taking on Mfusi Maxhayi.

He won the fight and remains undefeated.

Speaking about his award, Nombewu says he is happy he represented Ekurhuleni well during his fights.

“When in the ring, I knew that I was not doing it for me, but I was fighting for Ekurhuleni and motivating young boxers to believe in themselves and work hard,” says an excited Nombewu.

He thanks his sponsors for ensuring he has everything he needs in the ring.

“I promise to continue working to make residents of Ekurhuleni proud,” Nombewu concludes.
