Duduza- The Anawanti Developmental Organisation in Kodisang Street is reintegrating recovering drug addicts back into society through gardening.

Individuals who have been involved in substance abuse need a vote of confidence from the community in which they live.

The organisation has started a vegetable garden at the Duduza police station.

Shaheed Ndogeni (58), the training and capacity manager, understands that it’s difficult for some individuals who come straight out of rehabilitation to go back into society without being judged.

“It is because of this issue that we decided to help these young people be active members of society,” says Ndogeni.

The organisation not only caters to recovering addicts, but also to the unemployed youth.

Project manager Themba Mabaso (45) feels it is important for young people to keep busy and stay away from substance abuse and crime. The Duduza police station plays an important role in the organisation by referring young people who are involved in crime and substance abuse.

Bringing hope back into the lives of the youth of Kwatsaduza is their primary mission.

Thokozani Xaka (26), a member of the organisation, explains how he came to realise his passion for gardening through the programme.

Gardening is done everyday in the mornings and evenings.

The organisation will be launching co-operatives to assist the unemployed youth in the near future.
