Illegal immigrants arrested in search at Everest

Springs police searched for illegal mining equipment and illegal immigrants at the Everest Informal Settlement on Tuesday (May 19).

Local police were assisted by members from the South African Defence Force and security personnel from Gold One.

The search yielded positive results, and mining equipment – used to process gold and other the precious metals – was found.

Precious metals in powder form were also found, packed in bags and plastic containers.

Spokesman for Springs police Capt Johannes Ramphora says 38 illegal immigrants were arrested and taken to the police cells.

They will be taken to the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp, which is a detention centre for undocumented migrants.
