Train burns at New Era

A train at the New Era Station caught alight, last night (Thursday).

Resident Thomas Dladla says he heard noises and discovered the fire when he went out to investigate.

The passenger car of one of the trains was alight.

Dladla explains that security guards at the station separated the coach from the train before the flames grew stronger.

Another resident, Busi Mahlangu, says she was passing the station and witnessed the fire just after 9pm.

Mahlangu claims there were no passengers on the train, as the train was stationary.

According to Daine Jones, spokesperson for emergency services, the fire started at approximately 9pm.

Jones confirms the train, which was bound for Johannesburg, was stationary when it caught alight.

He says when firefighters arrived to extinguish the flames, the Metrorail security guards had separated the coach from the train.

“No one was injured in the incident as the train was stationary and not travelling,” says Jones.

Jones adds the cause of the fire is not known and will be investigated.
