Consumer rights day at KwaThema hall

The Department of Trade and Industry, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) and the National Credit Regulator celebrated consumer rights day at KwaThema Hall on Sunday.

Information Officer from the NCC, Ebrahim Mohammed outlined the purpose of the event by stating their commission strives to create an enabling environment for consumers so consumers do not enter into transactions that are detrimental.

Mohammed also highlighted consumer protection being important as they are on the United Nations guidelines for consumer rights.

The CEO of the National Credit Regulator, Nomsa Motshegare explained the role of the NCR in protecting consumers.

According to Motshegare every consumer has a right to one free credit report every year.

She urged the community to stop paying off debt with debt because you end up paying more.

Delivering his key note address Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mzwandile Masina said the institutions such as the commision and the regulator have been created to protect consumer rights.

Masina added every product should be tested by the SABS and must have an expiration date for your health.

He reminded the public there is no free credit.

According to Masina, when creditors are insolvent it affects our economy dramatically as unemployment increases.

In his conclusion he urged the community to report products they suspect are illegally sold in the community that do not have the SABS sticker or an expiration date.
