Eskom denies reports of nation-wide blackout

Following reports on serious problems at Eskom, saying there might a national blackout, the electricity company has denied these claims.

It was reported in other news outlets that the CEO of Eskom, Tshediso Matona, told stakeholders on Monday (January 12) that one unanticipated event at any of its power stations could plunge the nation into total electricity failure which may take weeks to resolve.

Khulu Phasiwe, spokesman for Eskom, says it is not true that there will be a nationwide blackout.

“I’m sure you are aware that the system is constantly constrained and that balancing the supply and demand of electricity is a daily challenge,” he says.

“At this stage, we do not envisage that we will need to go into load shedding today (January 13), but the system is very tight and will remain tight for the rest of the week, and for the next couple of months.

“Should anything unexpected happen that may cause the loss of generating units, we may need to go into load shedding.”
