Gogo celebrates 91 years

Gogo Baphilile Evelyn Mabena (91) is one of the old citizens in KwaThema.

Gogo Mabena turned 91 on January 1 and celebrated her birthday with family, neighbours and friends at her home in KwaThema’s Tornado section.

Mabena, whose husband died many years ago, is blessed with three sons, three daughters, 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She said her biggest dream is to live until she turns 100 so that she can have more time to share her wisdom with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mabena said her secret to being blessed with a long life is listening to and understanding her parents when they taught her to respect elders.

“The secret to a long life is listening to the parents’ advises and do as they say,” she said.

Curtis Mahlangu (69), one of Mabena’s nephews, who is also a pastor, said he achieved all that he has today because of the teachings that he received from his aunt.

“She has been a role model to many of us in the family and taught us to believe in ourselves,” said proud Mahlangu. He added that he wishes his aunt many more years to come so that she can pass on her wisdom to many young people not only from her family, but to the youth of Kwatsaduza.
