Free truck tests in October

This is the way Ekurhuleni celebrates Transport Month..

Ekurhuleni metro requests truck owners with a gross vehicle mass of 3500 kg and more to visit its testing stations for a free vehicle assessment.

These assessment campaign forms part of the metro’s contribution in commemorating Transport Month for the month of October.

Transport Month, an annual feature on the calendar of the Department of Transport was first launched in October 2005 to raise awareness of the important role of transport in the economy.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman of Ekurhuleni Metro says the free vehicles assessment of the trucks will be done at the Springs Testing Station, a well as the testing stations in Nigel, Brakpan, Germiston, Boksburg and Kempton Park.

He encouraged owners of taxis and buses to also do the tests.

“The assessment involves the checking of tyres, breaks, hand breaks, steering mechanism and the general condition of the vehicle,” says Gadebe.

Councillor Thumbu Mahlangu, member of the mayoral committee on transport, encouraged public operators to continue their regular vehicle tests, even beyond the campaign this October.

“Ensuring that we have roadworthy vehicles on our roads is fundamental for us as a city because we have a high volume of heavy vehicles driving in and out of Ekurhuleni,” says Mahlangu.

According to him the free test campaign seeks to curb fatal road accidents as a result of vehicles not being road worthy.

The MMC encourages all public transport operators to seize the opportunity to be informed about the roadworthy status of their vehicles so that corrective measures can be taken and prevent deadly accidents.
