Prayer to fight against crime

The KwaThema community held a prayer to fight against crime and substance abuse on Saturday.

The prayer was organised by KwaThema crime prevention, youth desk, victim empowerment and the community police forum in partnership with the community of KwaThema.

Before the prayer service, the police, youth desk and the crime prevention units distributed pamphlets containing the information about crime to educate the community.

According to Siyabonga Mahlaba, organising committee chairman, the prayer was aimed at asking God to intervene in a fight against crime.

“We have realised that, we can not fight against crime alone but we need God’s intervention to help us win the fight,” said Mahlaba.

He said the drugs use increase in the township is like a spread of a disease that kills people in the communities.

Mahlaba said the committee wishes to see many drugs addicts who have already dropped out from school going back to school.

Speaking on behalf of KwaThema police, Captain Mandla Phori confirmed that each year, the police will host a prayer, praying against drugs and substance abuse in the community.

He appealed to the community to help the police in a battle against drug use in the township.

“The police needs the community’s assistance to fight against the use of drugs that has already robbed some of the youth of their future,” he said.

A pensioner from KwaThema, Amos Shabalala said because of the high rate of criminal activities taking place all over the country, he does not feel safe in his home.

“When going to collect my pension money, I ask someone to accompany me because I am afraid that I might be robbed by the criminals on my way back,” said Shabalala.
