‘We are cool without drugs’

Learners at Geluksdal Secondary School received education on and were told about the consequences of using drugs.

The drug awareness campaign was recently organised by Hola Mthi in partnership with Alaska kwaito group.

After visiting many secondary schools around the country, the company, Alaska group and Mandla Hlatshwayo known for his role as Siphiwe Phosa on the SABC 1’s soapie, Generations, decided to educate the learners in all provinces with the aim of engaging them in an attempt to find a solution to drugs and alcohol abuse challenges faced by the youth.

Speaking on behalf of Hola Mthi, Ambrose Padi said they are targeting learners in high schools because they believe that it where most of the young people get introduced to drugs.

“Because of the peer pressure that the youth get from their friends at schools, we want to ensure that they get all the information that they need to understand the dangers of using drugs,” said Padi, adding that it breaks their hearts to know that even young girls are also taking drugs.

“We dedicated our time to educating our young about drugs with the aim of building a drug free society,” said Thabo ‘Crazy T’ Tsotetsi from Alaska.

He said they preach the word of no to drugs to help build the future of the youth.

Crazy T said because the members of Alaska never took drugs, they want to show the youth that taking drugs does not make one cool or seem clever, but instead it destroys their dreams.

Sifiso Maduna, a Grade11 learner, said he will share all the information that he received with his friends and family.

“I thought I knew everything about drugs, but the truth is, I gained more information from different speakers who educated us on the dangers of using drugs,” said Sifiso.
