Careers: choose to be a plumber

Brian Mogotsi has been a plumber for almost 10 years and says he still loves his job.

Brian studied a three-month plumbing course at the Builders Training Centre in Soweto.

He says the plumbing courses duration differs from one institution to the other.

Some of the institutions offer a three-month course while others offer a three-year course.

Mogotsi says one of the major minimum requirements to do the course at the Builders Training Centre is being able to speak, read and write English and have studied mathematics and science in high school.

Being a plumber means working with measurements at all times.

After completing the course one needs to have the required training in order to perform in this trade and have completed an apprenticeship or a learnership lasting for two years.

“If you go through the learnership programme you will need to pass 23 units, at which point you will obtain an NQF Level 3 certificate in plumbing,” said Mogotsi.

The Advantages of becoming a plumber

  • n Faster than average job growth.
  • n One of the largest and highest paying construction occupations.
  • n Formal education is not required.
  • n Can be your own boss.

Speaking about what he enjoys the most in being a plumber, Mogotsi said he likes the fact as a self employed plumber, he does not have report to the manager after completing the job.

“I also enjoy my independence and working with different people while also helping them and creating employment for others,” said a smiling Mogotsi.
