Dumping site turns into a community park

The big open space at Barcelona section in KwaThema is being cleared to make way for a community park.

The area that has been used as an illegal dumping site for many years by the residents living next to it, will soon be a community park.

Thieves will have nowhere to hide their stolen goods after the filthiness that covered that area has been cleaned.

The metro’s motor graders are busy on the site to prepare for the work ahead to change the area into a place to be used for relaxation by the residents.

According to ward councillor Wilson Busakwe, the work of cleaning the area started two weeks ago.

He said the area will soon have a fence and jungle gyms that were installed in the wrong place because of the filthiness that filled the area will soon be moved to the middle of the park where children can play freely.

Busakwe urged residents to respect that area and not to build their shacks on that piece of land.

“I understand that our people are looking for places where they can build their homes, but that area is not cleaned for them to build shacks on but is aimed at bringing development to the residents,” said Busakwe.

Resident Ennica Mogashoa confirmed that the smell caused by the filthiness in that area was unbearable.

She said the area was indeed a place for thieves to hide their stolen goods while others turned the area into a place to sleep.

“There were blankets and mattresses in this illegal dumping site that belonged to the alleged homeless people who were sleeping next to the dumping area,” said Mogashoa.

Sizwe Thobela, who was spotted helping to clean the area, said he is grateful for what their ward councillor has organised for the residents of Barcelona.
