Samuel Nkosi’s house was cleaned for Mandela Day

Samuel Nkosi (91), senior citizen in KwaThema says he will not forget this year's Mandela Day.

After spending almost two years living in three rooms that were left during the fire that took the lives of two young girls and a man who was trying to help them in 2012, the Nkosi family will soon experience living in the comfort of their nine rooms house again.

On the Mandela Day, the red ants and the ANC’s ward 79 Youth League and the Women’s League members cleaned the house, demolishing the useless walls that were left after the fire destroyed the house’s five rooms.

The work done was to prepare for the rebuilding of the house.

The pensioner who lives with his son said they have been the victims of rains and cold weather as the remaining three rooms were also affected by the fire.

“The doors could not close well and the other room has an opening on the roof which allows cold air to come inside my bedroom,” said Nkosi.

Ward councillor Ivy Nkosi confirmed that the metro has approved for the rebuilding of the house.

“The construction will start on Monday and is expected not to take long to be finished,” explained Nkosi.

Adding that because the family could not afford to rebuild the house, the metro saw the need to intervene and help build a decent home for the senior citizen and his family.

“Mandela left a message that those who have something should help make the lives of the disadvantaged better,” said Nkosi.
