Uniting against poor service delivery

Service delivery was the common cause that united residents of Tsakane and Duduza for a march last Thursday.

Land ownership and housing development were some of the demands highlighted as a priority in the memorandum handed over to Eric Xayiya, who is a special adviser to the Gauteng Premier.

Residents from Extensions Six, Nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 19, Langaville and Zamani all left from their areas and met at the Tsakane Customer Care Centre.

They met with a representatives from the mayor’s office and department of Human Settlement in Ekurhuleni.

Marchers were not pleased when the premier David Makhura did not come to the march as they had requested.

In reading the memorandum, Tebogo Mokgope from Tsakane said they had approached the premier as their last hope, because the mayor and councillors have failed them.

He said land issue was a serious matter in the country, and said residents sharing stands must be separated as a matter of urgency.

Different political and civil organisations marched with the residents in a show of solidarity.

Siyabonga Mbuqe, Numsa local secretary in Nigel, said the conditions that people live in are not suitable for voters.

He spoke about the importance of unity, adding that democracy has divided people by placing them in different wards and sections, while they sit and wait for a better life.
