Crime awareness day at the Springs Police Station

The EMPD K9 Dog Unit demonstrates the capability of the dogs

A crime awareness day was held at the Springs Police Station on May 1.

Children from different churches in Devon listened while Sergeant Dawie van der Merwe explained the duties of the EMPD K9 Dog Unit.

These children were accompanied by Percy Sukazi and Pastor Joe Malomane as well as parents.

After a brief talk on crime by Springs police officials Amanda Greybe and Yolanda Cathill, the children were divided into two groups and visited the charge office.

“The officials on duty explained what happens when a charge is laid and the procedures to follow,” says Greybe.

Each group had a glimpse of an empty cell where awaiting trial prisoners are being kept.

Van der Merwe explained to the children how the dogs are trained to find different drugs and also explosives.

Khosi Fakude and Alfred Mbenyani, both social workers, explained the reason why they shouldn’t get involved with crime or drugs as they are the future leaders of the country.

Sukazi said it is best to train the youth physically and spiritually from a young age and to make them aware of the dangers of crime and the use of drugs.
