Election results to be announced later today

Although Gauteng results are the slowest to come through, the IEC remains confident that final results will be given through on Saturday May 10.

JOHANNESBURG – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is confident it will announce the final results of South Africa’s fifth democratic elections at 18:00 on Saturday as the vote count reaches completion on Friday.

IEC Chairperson Pansy Tlakula was quoted by SA Breaking News, “Ladies and gentlemen, with 97.96 percent of results captured, we are confident of being able to announce the official results tomorrow.

“We have received four objections submitted in terms of Section 55 of the Electoral Act and the Commission will deal with these before we announce the final results at 18:00 tomorrow here at the National Results Centre.”

The announcement is set to be broadcast live on SABC 2 and on other news channels.

Tlakula said voter turnout was 73.26 percent and the commission is still waiting for delivery of ballots from eight foreign missions for inclusion in the count for the international voting district.
