A 58-year-old man faces 20 years in prison after being convicted of raping his girlfriend's niece.

A 58-year-old man received a 20 years prison sentence after being found guilty of raping a 20-year-old woman.
Bethuel Motsitsi was sentenced on August 6 in the Springs Magistrate’s Court.

Ekurhuleni SAPS district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole praised Springs SAPS Warrant Officer Rudolph Jansen for his dedication, which contributed to securing the 20-year sentence for Motsitsi.

Sithole noted Jansen’s tireless efforts in investigating the case were instrumental in achieving justice for the victim and combating gender-based violence.

According to Ekurhuleni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela, the incident occurred on November 14 last year, when the victim visited her aunt in Reedville.

Sekgobela explained the victim shared a bed with her aunt and her aunt’s boyfriend, Motsitsi.

“That night, after the aunt woke up early to clean the kitchen, Motsitsi told her to check for a repairman who was supposed to fix the wardrobe,” said Sekgobela.

“Once the aunt left, Motsitsi returned to the bed, where he began to touch the woman inappropriately, undressed and raped her.

Sekgobela added that the victim managed to escape and reported the incident to neighbours when Motsitsi went to the bathroom.
