EMPD does drug abuse outreach for youth

To provide information to those battling drug addiction, the EMPD officers travelled to the Marikana informal community.

Kwa-Thema – EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit officers embarked on an outreach programme to engage drug addicts on anti-drug and substance abuse awareness on July 20 and 21.

To provide information to those battling drug addiction, the EMPD officers travelled to the Marikana informal community.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, officers engaged young men and women on the dangers of substance abuse and how it could negatively impact one’s health and lead to criminality.

“Drugs and substance abuse have become a major future destroyer in communities as more young people fall victim to it.

“The officers gave the young people contact details and information on programmes and resources for addiction recovery they might use to combat their drug addiction,” Thepa said.

Officers also spoke about leading a healthy lifestyle and being engaged in sports clubs as ways to avoid drug use.

“They also shared information on training centres that offer skills development programmes to help them empower themselves because most resort to drugs due to unemployment.

“The EMPD will continue to raise awareness on anti-drug and substance abuse to help fight the social ills that kill communities,” Thepa added.
