Young players enjoy day of badminton games

The club members were excited to receive visitors from North-West University and the Department of Correctional Services.

Eyethu Badminton Development Club hosted a social tournament of friendly games at Duduza Multipurpose Centre on Saturday.

The club members were excited to receive visitors from North-West University and the Department of Correctional Services.

“Some of our players officiated the games as umpires and line judges. We managed to put on 30 games on the day.

“I would say that it was a success,” said Samuel ‘Roller’ Mangola.

Mongala serves at Eastern Gauteng Badminton Association and Badminton South Africa as transformation development officer, with his primary assignment being to make badminton an inclusive, accessible and highly competitive sport, capturing the imagination of players and fans across all communities and establishing a lasting legacy of excellence and sportsmanship.


Kagiso Seloana (9) received a medal for the best umpire in all the finals. With him is Wilson Mokomene, Badminton South Africa member.

Results of the tournament:

  • Refiloe Tshabalala beat Mbali Le Roux, in the girls’ singles.
  • Asanda Mabuza beat Lerato Mahlophe, in the boys’ singles.
  • Refiloe Tshabalala and Ofentse Mahlangu beat Mbali Le Roux and Angel Kubheka, in the girls’ doubles.
  • Jack Mbiza and Omolemo Njoro beat Moeketsi Mmonko and Khutso Momo, in the boys’ doubles.

Prizes were distributed by Wilson Mokomene (Badminton South Africa member), Philemon Msimanga (CEO of Ibhola Lethu) and Andries Makgalemele (CEO of MA Innovation).

“I would like to thank Local Sports Confederation, City of Ekurhukeni and Gauteng Sports for assisting with medals and branding materials, as well as JMB Funeral Services for assisting with water and Boxer Stores Nigel which assisted with breakfast and lunch,” said Mongala.

Andries Mokoena, the CEO of Makgalemele Innovation, was also present to challenge minds with his educational games.

“Our headquarters is Duduza Multipurpose Centre where we have four courts. We train Monday to Friday, from 15:30 to 18:00,” he added.
