Academy is a pathway to possibilities

The Active Academy is a registered after-school programme founded in 2020 to help learners with academics.

Kwa-Thema – In the heart of the community is a place that’s been a beacon of hope and excellence for children since 2020.

The Active Academy, founded by Nthabiseng Mampa with a mission to uplift and nurture, has worked tirelessly for the past five years to ensure learners excel academically and stay safe and engaged.

Active Academy is a registered extra lessons programme operating at Ntokozweni Primary School.

Mampa, a former daycare educator, realised children struggled with homework during Covid-19.

“Some parents knock off late from work, so it’s a challenge to find the time to help their children with homework, or grandparents raise some children, who can’t help them.

“The number of learners began increasing in 2021. I approached Ntokozweni Primary School to host the classes there to accommodate the growing number of learners,” Mampa said.

Active Academy has five teachers and 66 learners from grades One to 12. On Saturdays, they help learners with reading and spelling.

Her goal was to help the learners academically and provide a safe environment where they could thrive.

“By keeping them engaged in meaningful activities after school, we ensure they are not left vulnerable to the dangers of the streets.

The academy helps learners with homework, projects, reading and spelling.

“In summer, the classes operate from 14:30 to 18:00, and in winter, they end at 17:00. My dream for Active Academy is to see us have our own venue and for the children to wear our T-shirts.

“I want us to produce learners who will be prominent in their future careers. I enjoy teaching the young ones because it’s a fun experience. We incorporate singing into the lessons so they can easily grasp the information,” Mampa added.

She evaluates the learners’ progress throughout the terms.

“Over the years, we have seen remarkable progress and success in our learners. This dedication to academic excellence has made us a cornerstone in our community.’
