Learning programme celebrates decade of existence

The community project that works hand-in-hand with parents celebrated its 10th birthday.

Tsakani – We can do this community project, based in Ext 12, celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 15.

Matshidiso Silinda (52) founded the community project in 2014, aiming to help children from the area with homework, create a safe space for them and keep them occupied through sports and other educational activities.

Silinda started the learning programme from her home to get children off the streets. The initiative caters for children from as young as four until 16.

Furthermore, she is an all-rounder – a teacher and sports coach for netball and soccer. Silinda said she started this initiative to make a difference in her community.

“It is an honour to acknowledge the 10-year existence of the programme, for which I am grateful. Many children are exposed to crime, substance abuse, child pornography and other harmful things. I aim to keep these children occupied in every way possible through sports, reading, drama and dancing.

“I formulate activities to do daily. This is an incredible way to avoid teenage pregnancy and other unexpected teenage issues. The only thing our children need is attention and different learning methods.

“Teaching young brains new and impactful things is exciting and fascinating to them,” she said.

Silinda said she did not study education but her passion for working with children has fuelled this milestone.

She emphasised that children need to be taught how to be fit from a young age and that active fun-play activities teach children to work together and respect each other.

“From Monday to Saturday, I help 18 children with their homework, and on Saturdays, we do life skills and sports. I introduced sports to help their young minds and bodies to stay active. We can learn while having fun, and sports allow us to do both,” said Silinda.

Silindile added that she would like sponsorship from local businesses or community members.

“I would appreciate sponsorship or donations of sporting kits, stationery, and food parcels. A helping hand from the community can impact this programme substantially.

“The aim is to keep this initiative running for another decade. We are grateful to have made it to the 10th year,” added Silindile.
