Mamepe Striders ready for community run

The Duduza Annual Community Run will take place on April 28.

Duduza – The Mamepe Striders are just weeks away from their second official run (April 28) as a club.

“We are proud and encouraged as a club for the strides we have achieved since our inception. Our mission has been clear from the start – to make running fashionable, accessible and attractive to all the folks in the townships,” explained Thabo Moorosi, the club’s chairperson.

Established in 2022, the members are excited about the many young children joining the development and making their presence felt in the track and field space.

“In our first year as a team at the Comrades Marathon, we had about five runners and no women. However, through hard work and our burning ambition to grow the team, we painted a different Comrades Marathon picture in 2023.

“We had about 26 members, including seven females, participating in the Comrades, and the numbers look much better for the 2024 race,” he added.

He said the Duduza Annual Community Run does not belong to the team, but to the community it serves, including the surrounding townships and suburbs.

“The project’s success and legacy depend on the support of the community and the runners. We added a new distance (32km), and the runners must come prepared.

“We invite you to join hands with us, whether as a runner or supporter, to make our upcoming race memorable.

“Our gratitude will forever go to our sponsors, who continue to believe this project is needed to help fight the social ills confronting our youth and defocus them from their future aspirations,” he added.
