Those who knew him said he was an exceptional man and a life-changing inspiration.

Geluksdal Secondary School is mourning the loss of teacher Joseph ’Joe’ Arends (59). Born on January 8, 1965, Arends died on February 10.

He started his teaching career at the school in 2005. Although he was strict and disciplined, his sense of humour, intelligence and love for teaching impacted the learners at the school.

Those who knew him said he was an exceptional man and a life-changing inspiration. His love for mathematics was infectious, and he frequently challenged and motivated his learners.

He could show a learner they are unique and assist in building their confidence. Even though Arends’ death was sudden, his impact on the school he taught at for 18 years is undeniable.

His patience, compassion and dedication to teaching will always inspire those he left behind to do better.

Arends’ legacy of kindness and academic excellence will live on for generations.

He will be laid to rest on February 17. The mass will be held at the Roman Catholic Church in Westehoek, Geluksdal, at 10:00.
