Sakhelwe Primary School learners and staff get a peak at World Cricket Trophy

Sakhelwe learners took photos with Themba.

Kwa-Thema – Sakhelwe Primary School learners had a pleasant Friday morning as the ICC U19 World Cricket Trophy made its way to the school.

The trophy tour was done around Ekurhuleni at different schools by ICC staff and Sakhelwe was one of the chosen schools.

This is as South Africa is hosting the U19 Men’s World Cup with the final games played at Willowmoore in Benoni.

Cricket SA services manager Colin Gxowa said Sakhelwe belongs to one of the cricket hubs in Kwa-Thema.

“This is one school which supports and is also involved in cricket. We want them to keep being involved in cricket, hence we visited them,” he said.

With the host team, South Africa, having lost in the semis against India, Gxowa said, “I’m disappointed as I would have loved to see South Africa play in the finals. However, not all is lost as we are still involved as the hosts.”

The learners at Sakhelwe wore ICC World Cup t-shirts with cricket players wearing their cricket attire. Teachers also showed their involvement as they also wore cricket t-shirts with the principal wearing her full KFC mini cricket uniform.

Principal Vuyolwethu Seoketsa said, “We feel honoured to be one of the chosen schools to show off the trophy.”

Viwe Mabulu hyping up the learners.

She said there are cricket stars who attended Sakhelwe, mentioning Mpumi Mashiloane as one of them.

“Our learners were also invited to watch the finals,” she said.

The learners danced on stage and cheered and also took photos with the trophy after it was unveiled and its name ‘Themba’ announced to them.

The convoy made its way to other schools before returning to Willowmoore Park. The World Cup was won by Australia on Sunday after beating India by 79 runs.
