Residents fed up with the accidents on their street

The residents want speed humps erected.

Kwa-Thema – Moropa Street residents in White City felt enough accidents had happened on their street and took action by barricading the area.

On Saturday, the residents met and decided to close their street using barrier tape and stones. They later removed the stones from one end to make way for cars belonging to the street’s homeowners.

Resident Lebohang Mabona said they had submitted petitions to the metro through the councillor and the CCC (customer care centre) manager. However, it seems like their grievances always fall on deaf ears.

“We want speed humps because motorists don’t adhere to the speed limit. We feel speed humps will force them to meet the limit.”

According to Mabona, motorists use the street as a shortcut from Tsakani to Kwa-Thema.

“So far, speeding cars have knocked three children and two adults, and we don’t want that to happen to more of us,” she said.

Mabona said it’s been two years that they’ve been sending petitions but feel the petitions don’t make their way to the Roads Department but end at the CCC.

“The mistake we made as residents was not making copies of the petitions, and now we can’t track the process,” she continued.

Mabona feels the domestic road she lives on has become a main road. The residents have called on the metro to respond to their grievances within seven working days.

“If not responded to, we’ll end up erecting our illegal humps like they did on Mogatle Street,” she said.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said, “There is a process the residents need to follow, such as signing petitions and memorandums.

“They need to keep copies for it to be easy for them to follow up. When submitting, they also need to get the name and position of the person who received the petition or memorandum on behalf of the metro.”

Dlamini said though there are things such as the availability of the budget which needs checking, it is also vital for the community to follow the proper procedures, uphold the law and not erect their humps.

The Kwa-Thema customer relations manager, Andries Nkabinde, said he is aware of the petitions submitted by the residents on Moropa and Mogatle streets because he received them.

He has submitted them to the Roads Department but is waiting for feedback.
