Operation Shanela sweeps criminals out of Tsakani

The streets were manned by SAPS and other law enforcers.

Tsakani – As part of Operation Shanela, law enforcers arrested 234 suspects in Tsakani between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.

Among the suspects, they nabbed 108 for contact crimes, 12 for contact-related crimes, seven for property crimes, 58 for tampering with essential infrastructure, three for crimes depending on police action, 11 for warrants of arrest, and 31 for GBV issues.

Detectives arrested other suspects during their suspect-tracing operations to curb various crimes in Ekurhuleni.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, led the operations in Tsakani on Thursday.

On Thursday, they arrested 24 suspects for being undocumented, discontinued four cars and took a Toyota Quantum for inquiry because it was linked to a case opened in Mamelodi in August.

Three suspects were arrested for dealing in drugs and two for possession of drugs. The law enforcers seized dagga, nyaope, crystal meth, Mandrax and rock.

They shut down four illegal taverns and confiscated liquor. During the operation, they visited 20 spaza shops for compliance, issued 12 notices to shop owners for non-compliance, and closed two.

An imbizo in Tsakani Proper discouraged residents from withdrawing cases, especially those for GBV.

Regional police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela said they had noted a pattern of GBV victims reporting cases to the police but withdrawing them after a few days.

“We also encourage residents to report corrupt police officers to help us root out all the bad elements in the department,” she said.

As part of the campaign, members of social crime prevention, communication officers and other law enforcement agencies did a school search at Letsie Primary School, followed by a talk on bullying and teenage pregnancy.
