Changing the world, one boy at a time

Rough childhood leads to abuse

Kwa-Thema – The Lalezo and Thabang Xaba foundations want to empower and put more effort into a boy.
On Saturday, the two foundations hosted a boy child empowerment summit at the old Council Chambers at the old Kwa-Thema Care Centre.

The day saw 80 boys from local high schools and Theo Twala Primary School attend. Thabang Xaba, the Thabang Xaba Foundation founder, chose the boys because they’ve had a rough childhood growing up in fatherless homes and some without father figures.

Xaba said a rough childhood has caused the boys to end up being abusive, using substances and being involved in gangsterism.

“We are talking with the boys hoping it will somehow lead to a behavioural change. The stories they shared with us showed how wounded they are, some of them were even sodomised,” Xaba said.

He said the community at large is not trying to change the boys into being better citizens but they throw judgement and rejection to them.

“This summit is our build-up to the 16 days of Activism as we try to change the world one boy at a time,” Xaba said.

The talks will continue on Saturday at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve where they will be speaking of rediscovering your purpose.

He asked for those who’d like to help to come forward whether in playing a physical role in the programme or in financially contributing.
