Over 245 people were arrested during the police operation.

Kwa-Thema – Brigadier Lebohang Machakela, the SAPS Ekurhuleni deputy district commissioner, led Operation Shanela in Kwa-Thema on Wednesday and Thursday.

Officers arrested over 245 suspects for various crimes during the operation. Among the detectives’ arrests were 135 for contact crimes, 27 for contact-related crimes, 54 for other serious crimes and 29 for GBV-related incidents.

During the main operation in the Kwa-Thema policing precinct comprising SAPS and other law enforcement agencies on Thursday morning, officers arrested six suspects for being undocumented, shut down four illegal liquor outlets and confiscated liquor, arrested one suspect for possession of a stolen motor vehicle – a white Toyota Tazz, as per Boksburg theft case of September 2017 – issued 68 traffic fines to the value of R31 100 to motorists, impounded four vehicles, arrested two suspects for dealing in dagga and drugs and seized three generators, three compressors and a wrench.

An imbizo was also conducted on Mlangeni Street, Geduld, to address the issue of case withdrawals in court, especially rape cases. The community members were encouraged to let the law take its course to save the state’s resources.

They could raise their concerns about crime and their complaints, if any, regarding services rendered by their local police station.

The main concerns were that the police station’s building was not conducive to serving the community, and there were insufficient police vans.

The police station’s number was shared with community members, and they were encouraged to report corruption whenever police officers took bribes on their watch.

The numbers are 071 675 7010, 071 675 7019 or 082 822 7575.

Machakela appreciated the law enforcers for their impact in the area because no one reported serious crime during their presence.
