ANCYL Ward 80 celebrate women of the revolution

Young women should be groomed to lead.

Kwa-Thema – The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) of Ward 80 in Kwa-Thema enjoyed a Women of the Revolution celebration at the House of Virtue Church on Saturday.

The programme was to honour women while having them speak of the past and also focusing on the future of women in politics.

The ward’s ANCWL branch secretary and ward councillor Celiwe Nkosi-Ramothibe said one should be grateful to the 1956 generation of women who stood up in a world with no technology yet managed to mobilise to lead a march to the Union Buildings to fight against the then pass laws.

“We are here today with IDs and not carrying them wherever we go. This is because of that generation who stood up for us,” she said.

The Ekurhuleni ANCWL regional chairperson and the MMC for City Development and Economic Development Nomadlozi Nkosi said one should be grateful to the late Charlotte Maxeke who managed to be the first woman to confront the ANC leadership and told them that there should be women in the leadership.

“There is still no equality in our organisation. We still find women being deputies or holding the ‘famous’ position of treasurer. We should fight for our space so that we see women being chairpersons and secretaries,” she said.

Nkosi said there should be a generational mix in positions of power and that young women have to be trained, educated and groomed for them to be able to be in a position of power.
