People to be educated on Alzheimer’s and dementia

People to learn about softball, alzheimer and dementia

Kwa-Thema – The Flames Softball Club will host its inaugural invitational and commemoration tournament on August 26 at the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex.

This will be in honour of a softball legend, Victor ‘Bra Vic’ Gawushe, to raise awareness of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and to initiate a softball revival and development programme in Kwatsaduza.

Gawushe is a former teacher at Kenneth Masekela Secondary School who taught for 40 years and now suffers from dementia.

Bophelo Kodisang, the Flames’ general manager, said “A lot of people in our communities don’t know about Alzheimer’s and dementia and this is an opportunity to teach them about it.”

The tournament will be in partnership with Dementia South Africa and the Zanele Mbeki Care Centre which will be bringing the aged to learn about dementia and Alzheimer’s.

The event will comprise 12 teams of both men and women. Four teams will participate in mainstream softball, four in the masters’ stream and four in the women’s stream.

Kodisang said, “We’ve received confirmation of participation from softball teams as far as Botswana, Limpopo, Tshwane, Johannesburg, Sedibeng and here at home in Ekurhuleni.”

He said there will be five baseball coaching clinics for children who might be interested in the sport by Palmridge and Alexandra players.

According to Kodisang, the Health Department will also be on-site to provide basic health screening tests including prostate cancer, HIV, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
