Family lose garage to fire

The family tried to call the fire brigade. They couldn’t reach them until their bishop called the one in Springs.

Kwa-Thema – The Mngwandi family’s house in Wellem Street caught fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

With the help of neighbours, they could extinguish the fire before it spread to the rest of the house. Only the garage burned to the ground.

Speaking to the African Reporter, Regina Mngwadi said she was watching TV when she heard someone screaming outside her house.

“At first, I thought someone was trying to break in, but I quickly realised it was my son, pleading for help because his room was on fire.

“When I went outside, I saw flames coming from the garage. Neighbours were already running to help extinguish the fire,” she added.

Regina said they don’t know what caused the fire. They tried to call the fire brigade and couldn’t reach them until the fire was almost extinguished.

She said her son used the garage as a bedroom. He lost all his belongings and valuables in the fire.

“He lost all his clothes in the fire and is left with the ones he is wearing. I was busy renovating my house and also lost all the material stored in the garage,” she said.

Community members helped with cleaning after the fire.

According to her, she had started a sewing side hustle to earn an extra income, and lost her material as the fire started to make its way into the house.

She said the smoke destroyed parts of her dining room walls. It is hard for her to be in the house because she is asthmatic.

Regina is asking the community to help her rebuild her garage and to assist her son with clothes.
