CoE urges residents of Kwa-Thema to use electricity sparingly

The power system gets overloaded during the evening peak hours.

Kwa-Thema – Although the CoE restored power to Kwa-Thema after weeks of hard work, it nonetheless urged residents to use electricity sparingly.

The system is still under strain because only one transformer currently supplies the informal settlement instead of two.

Kwa-Thema was thrown into darkness when the Nkabinde substation, which supplies the informal settlement with power, caught fire over a month ago.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini explained, “The extent of the damage to the substation meant the metro had to find an alternative supply source.

“This led to rerouting the power source and connecting residents to the Vulcania substation, 4km away.

“A cable had to be installed to make this work, which took a long time because of the trenching. Also delaying the process were cable theft, protests and water pipe damage.

“Now that the power was restored, the metro continues refurbishing the Kwa-Thema substation as a long-term solution.

“In the meantime, the metro has to implement load reduction on a four-hour interval during evening peak hours from 17:00 to 21:00 to manage the supply until the system is back to normal, hence our call to use the power sparingly.”
