Learners make their parents proud

Winners will represent Gauteng.

The Gauteng East District of the Department of Education hosted its Foundation Phase Awards on Tuesday, October 18. The awards were held at Pinegrove Primary School.

They were awarded to Grade Three learners who participated in the Mathematics Challenge, the Life Skills Sculpture Competition and the Home Language Readathon and Spellathon.

“We worked with no budget. Our determination to make this a reality had us knocking on doors at places we didn’t think were possible,” said deputy chief education specialist Nontsikelelo Nogwam.

The children and their parents were entertained by performances from different schools, which included dancing and poetry sessions.

“Sometimes I get emotional when I think back to where we are coming from. We had nothing. But look at our kids, they are proud, they got their medals, and their trophies.

“Parents, we thank you for your continuous support. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed. We appreciate you,” praised Nogwam.

Trophy winners will proceed in the competition to represent the district on a provincial level.
