There are currently no reported cases of monkeypox in Ekurhuleni
Residents are to seek medical attention should they experience any of the symptoms.
The City of Ekurhuleni wishes to confirm that currently there are no reported cases of monkeypox in Ekurhuleni.
Head of Department for Health and Social Development Dr Gilbert Motlatla said the city’s health professionals are on high alert following the Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla’s, announcement of a confirmed monkeypox case in the country.
The virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, and close contact with respiratory secretions, skin lesions of an infected person or recently contaminated objects.

Transmission can also occur via the placenta from mother to foetus, which can lead to congenital monkeypox.
The incubation period for monkeypox is usually from six to 13 days but can range from five to 21 days.
The signs and symptoms are:
• Rash
• Fever
• Painful lymph nodes
• Oral ulcers
• Genital lesions
