Rugby keeps learners off the streets

The duo said most learners have nothing to do during the school holidays.

Tsakani – Tsakani Rugby Club players keep learners busy during school holidays.
Cleopatra Mathebula (22), who has been playing rugby since 2009, and Siyavuya Ntakumba (24), who started playing the sport in 2014, are teaching rugby to high school learners in Tsakani.
The duo said most learners have nothing to do during the school holidays.

There’s an opportunity for youngsters in Tsakani to learn about rugby.

“Rugby is a fun and highly active sport that exposes players to self-discipline, teamwork, social interactions and communications skills.
“There are also lots of health benefits associated with the sport, such as cardiovascular fitness and endurance, speed and ball-handling.
“We believe having learners take part in such activities is not only good for their social skills but life skills as well,” they said.
Thirteen-year-old Lesedi Maseko, who joined the programme earlier in March, said he joined out of curiosity.

“I have always seen the sport on television and started to wonder about it, so when the opportunity presented itself I went fully in.
“So far, I have been enjoying it and plan to go further with it,” he said.
