Police vehicle allegedly involved in hit-and-run

“We call for the harsh rule of law against this alleged offender.”

Kwa-Thema – Two children aged seven and 14 were struck by the driver of a police vehicle on Thursday afternoon.
The youngest was certified dead on the scene and the teenager was rushed to a local hospital for medical attention.
The driver allegedly sped off after the incident but residents gave chase and managed to get the vehicle’s registration number.
Kwa-Thema SAPS Const Nkululeko Magudulela said, “We are aware of the allegations of a police vehicle possibly linked to a hit-and-run incident.
“We cannot make any statement at the moment until all the facts have been gathered as to the legitimacy of the allegations,” he said.

The ANC Caucus is calling for a thorough investigation and immediate arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
Ekurhuleni councillor Jongizizwe Dlabathi said they are disappointed because police are expected to protect the community and not be culprits reported to be breaking the law.
“We call for the harsh rule of law against this alleged offender. This will be fair justice for the victim’s family.
“Sadly, with only a few days of the reopening of schools, this had to happen.
“This family had good wishes for their child and no family would want to receive such devastating news,” he added.
Dlabathi added that they appreciate the role of the residents who were not just bystanders when the accident occurred but ensured that they followed the culprit(s), got the details of the state vehicle and reported the matter to the authorities.
“We also appreciate them for not taking the law into their own hands,” he added.
The caucus is calling for Ekurhuleni’s Department of Community Safety to ensure that traffic wardens are deployed at all busy intersections to warrant safety and smooth flow of traffic on the roads.
